Stopping the World Bank from Land Grabbing

BRG (PNG) and PANG (Fiji) are supporting a campaign stopping the World Bank from land grabbing in the developing world. The World Bank uses its political and financial might through its investment agencies and institutions to force developing countries to follow a pre-prescribed model of development based on the neo-liberal principles of privitisation, deregulation, low corporate taxation and free market fundementalism.

Vanuatu leaders defying the rules amid ongoing corrupt land deals

Corrupt land deals in Vanuatu appear to be continuing at the highest levels. In the latest case, the Minister of Lands, Steven Kalsakau, is accused of allowing the sale of public land at discount rates to Lands Department staff. Any such sale would be in breach of a 2010 Council of Ministers resolution which suspended the sale of state land.

An AusAid-supported land reform program fuelled a land grab by Australian owned real estate companies based in Vanuatu. While reforms may be seen as a path to economic development, the Ni-Vanuatu are being robbed of their traditional rights to fish, hunt and live on what was once their ancestral land. Critics of the land reform program point out that a there is an increasing undercurrent of dissatisfaction among the younger generation who no longer have access to the resources that their parents once had.
